Mother and Child in Karin Village, Northern Thailand

A Mother's Love

Karin Village, Northern Thailand

Karin Couple in Northern ThailandBefore heading off to school, a shy girl clings by her mother’s side. The gentle touch of her mother’s hand assures her that everything will be alright.

Comparatively, Thailand’s educational system is well developed, and its literacy rate of 93.8% is among the highest in South-East Asia. However, it is not uncommon for parents to live a rather traditional life while their children go off to school to get a modern education.

Over 100 million children in the world do not go to school, two thirds of which are girls. Statistics also indicate that having an educated mother has a greater impact on the life of a child than that of an educated father. An educated mother is more likely to teach her children proper nutrition and health care, while making every effort to send her children to school, both boys and girls.
