Service with a Smile
Traveling in these parts of the world, the sight of children working for a living is witnessed time and again. The banks of the sacred Ganges offer many opportunities for a young boy to earn a living, such as by taxiing religious pilgrims across the river who have come from the far reaches of India to bathe in the holy waters, or even to die (it is said to be particularly auspicious to have your body buried in the Ganges). In addition, tourists make for a lucrative fare, looking for early morning boat rides up and down the river to take in the colorful spectacle of the devotees at sunrise. For a fee of fifty rupees per hour (the equivalent of a little over one dollar) this boy is happy to give service with a smile!
